"It's my first time being human."
I am a current undergraduate student at CUNY Brooklyn College - technically majoring in psychology and minoring in Latinx Studies - but I like to say "studying the mind and the social influences to and fro." I am also a CUNY Research Foundation Intern and Research Assistant in Dr. Ana Gantman's moral psychology lab. My forthcoming honors thesis explores the relationship between the rate of slavery in the United States and authoritarianism at the individual level. My fiction, non-fiction and scholarship writing has been published across journals, newspapers, magazines and virtual spaces.
Away from academia, I consume, curate and create art in all its forms. From concrete to abstract, I am with Baldwin in thinking that "the purpose of art is to lay bare the questions which have been hidden by the answers." Outside of asking questions, I love touching grass, being in the kitchen, and listening to others talk.
I am known amongst friends and colleages to constantly repeat "it's my first time being human" - a phrase I use to remind myself of not only the grace it takes to explore and learn but also to keep in mind the complexity of the human experience in attempting to understand existence as it currently develops.
It's your first time being human, too.
